PRESS RELEASE
February 1, 2023

On Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 12:39pm, Burlington City Police Patrols were dispatched to 100 Blue Devil Way at the Burlington City High School for a trespassing complaint. A Burlington City Police Department School Resource Officer at the school reported that an unknown subject gained entry into school and was discovered by a faculty member. When he was approached, the subject fled the school into a wooded area near James St.

Responding officers quickly established a perimeter where the trespasser was last seen and obtained additional information from school officials. The Burlington City High School and St. Paul’s Parochial School issued a “shelter in place” for both facilities while officers continued their investigation. A Police K9 Unit was requested from New Hanover Police Department along with the Burlington City Police Department’s Unmanned Aircraft System. As these specialized units arrived on scene the trespasser was located and taken into custody.

Additional investigation revealed that a 16 year old juvenile who was not a student at the school was assisted entering the building with the assistance of a high school student. While the juvenile did unlawfully enter the educational facility it was determined his intentions were not criminal and no students or staff were in danger. The juvenile was charged with Criminal Trespass and released to the custody of his parents.
